Bent barrel?

This pic of a Befehls Tiger from higher up the thread appears to have a bent barrel. I had thought this was caused by distortion of the photo but the aerials alongside are vertical, suggesting that it is the barrel which is bent rather than the photo.

Presumably this would be the result of the barrel taking the weight of the tank during a fall. In such a case, would a barrel be more likely to bend or break?

I ?

This gallery unknown, suggested to be 3.Kp in Restayn's 'Tiger I on the Eastern Front', is a potential match to #I.






* Both feature a custom star-shaped spacer on the drive sprocket hub (not observed elsewhere)
* The officer on the right in the first pic appears to be the same as the guy in the second - two pips, same medals & ribbon, similar scowl, etc
* David Byrden has identified Fahrg.250191 as #I and this Tiger is consistent with it, having the reinforced mantlet and no track link hangers



Any thoughts?

31x? revisit

At the top of this page is a post containing three Tiger pics from Ebay.

The first appeared to have the number 31x, the other two were unknown.

These photos now appear in the 'Archive of Modern Conflict' which has facilitated further identification.

This Tiger is #33x rather than #31x. The absence of track link holders on the turret suggest that it is #331.

From memory 'Tigers in the Mud' says it is the Tiger of Feldw. Rudolf Zwetti who is beside Otto Carius.

This is another pic of Zwetti not currently in the gallery. Looks like a different Tiger though.

Hi Robert,

I have moved the #301 photo in the gallery.

There seems to have been a misunderstanding over the proposed #312. In the gallery pic of #312 featuring this Tiger, 312 is the one in the background. The Tiger in the foreground is an unknown. Its identity has been discussed (probably on Missing Links) but no identity was found.





I will put this and #?12 in to the gallery as unknowns.

Theres something that looks like a three but actually it is not in the right postion for 502 turret number.

Hi Pascal,

Your suggestion that the pic four posts above was from 502 is correct. There is the characteristic large Balkenkreuz on the rear hull side



and the pic seems to be taken in the same location as this gallery 3.Kp unknown.

This pic from 'Tiger I on the Eastern Front/Restayn' is currently in the gallery as an unknown.



It is a match for this pic of xx1 from 'TIC I/Schneider' on the bent flap, bent skirt, turret stowage and raised 3rd track pin.



Together these pics give a number of features to help identification. The upper left of the turret bin is damaged, there is a large gouge to the left of the kugelblende, the third track pin is raised, the left hand track is absent.

The turret number being dark identifies 2.Kp or 3.Kp and makes the candidates 201, 211, 221, 231, 301, 311, 321, 331.
311 can be eliminated as it has no number on the bin, 331 lacks track links on the turret. I am aware of no photos of #211 but none of the remaining candidates match any of the distinguishing features of xx1, including flap and skirt damage, with the exception of #321.

This pic posted by Pascal matches the damaged upper left of the bin, the raised 3rd track pin and the missing track. None of the other features of #321 contradict what we know of xx1.

This Befehlstiger is currently a gallery unknown. It has a series of impact marks on the driver's plate/bow.


This old ebay pic is a match on the damage and mantlet type


This pic posted on page 1 of this thread has an impact mark on the bow which also seems to match, possibly a slightly earlier photo?


This old ebay photo is also a match. It has recently been added to the Archive of Modern Conflict (Photo E29813). At high resolution, the repaired impact holes on the driver's plate are a good match. This photo is captioned as being 1943 but the camo scheme suggests it may be later.

The plugs are not readily visible in the resolution I can post here.

If you look here and blow it up to 200%, the one above the driver's visor you should see, it is on the join of the camo colours.

It looks not like a what you call "flat fronted mantlet".

Perhaps my description is misleading / something is lost in translation.

This pic has a mantlet with the reinforcement bar over the gunner's scope and a large flat-fronted reinforced area alongside, with curved top and bottom corners.


This pic shows the same type of reinforced mantlet. There are shadows confirming the outline on both the dark and light camo areas of the 'flat-fronted' section. 100% certain.


The other two photos have the same type of mantlet too.
